Requiem For a Log
July 16th
There were 12 of us who decided to beat the heat with a dip into the lake last evening. The 23.5 degree water felt refreshingly cool in the 36 degree heat, especially for the two swimmers who still wore their wetsuits. We all swam out to the point in rippled conditions punctuated by repeated boat wash. Once at the Point, the conditions got a lot rougher so two turned back from there, two swam to the corner and turned around, six of us slogged on to the Painted Rocks, and John and David bravely swam all the way out to Gary's Log. We were happy to get back into the bay on the return leg.
While we were standing in the heat drying off without our towels, we saw
John and David coming in so, being sociable, decided to wait for them
and ask about their swim. Both came up to the park looking utterly
disconsolate (I think David was sobbing). John
blurted out between sobs "It's Gary's Log - it's broken!"
"It's only a stump now!" David cried out. With sad hugs all around we also felt for Gary, who took the brunt of the news stoically.
"I guess that's what happens when you get old." he said. I could relate.....
We will do this again on Thursday at 5:30pm.
